Why Does the Electric Bill for Your AC Increase After a Few Years?

Dear all readers, there are several reasons why the electricity bill for your air conditioner (AC) goes up after a few years. I’ll explain each reason in simple terms.

First, as the AC gets older, its parts start to wear out. This means the AC cannot work as efficiently as it did when it was new. Just like an old car needs more fuel to run smoothly, an old AC needs more electricity to cool the room. This extra effort increases the electricity bill.

Second, the filters in the AC can get dirty over time. The filters catch dust and dirt from the air. If they are not cleaned regularly, they get clogged. When the filters are blocked, the AC has to work harder to push the air through them. This extra effort makes the AC use more electricity.

Third, the coolant gas in the AC might start to leak. The coolant gas is important for cooling the air. If there is a leak, the amount of gas decreases, and the AC cannot cool the room properly. As a result, the AC runs longer to achieve the desired temperature, using more electricity and increasing the bill.

Fourth, regular servicing and maintenance of the AC are very important. If the AC is not serviced regularly, it will not work efficiently. Just like we need to go to the doctor for check-ups, the AC also needs regular check-ups to ensure everything is working well. This includes cleaning the coils, checking the gas level, and making sure all parts are in good condition.

Fifth, the thermostat might not be working correctly. The thermostat is a device that measures the room temperature and tells the AC when to turn on and off. If the thermostat is faulty, it might make the AC run more than necessary, leading to higher electricity consumption and a bigger bill.

Lastly, sometimes the outdoor unit of the AC can get dirty or blocked by leaves and debris. If the outdoor unit is not clean, the AC cannot release heat properly, making it work harder and use more electricity.
To save on your electricity bill, it’s a good idea to get the AC serviced every year, clean the filters regularly, check for gas leaks, and ensure the thermostat is working correctly. This will help the AC run efficiently and keep your electricity bill lower.
